Return to the birthplace

The Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni hermanni) forced to leave their original home ranges always seek to return there in a behavior named homing and well known among tortoises and turtles. This phenomenon of return to a birthplace where individuals spent several years of their life in the juvenile stage is observed in tortoises whose habitat has been disturbed by fire or degradation resulting from human action. Homing also happens with tortoises that have been intentionally displaced as part of safeguarding programs.
