Suspended at the time of the Revolution, the functions of the Haras National du Pin in the Orne department were restored under Napoleon at the beginning of the 19th century. The stud, which then had nearly seventy breeding horses, became one of the main breeding centers in France and played a major role in French horse breeding and in the improvement of racehorses. This is where the Thoroughbred was introduced and the French trotter breed created.
