Resurrection and Annunciation

These shutters of the Issenheim Altarpiece are visible once the altarpiece is open (first opening). They were unveiled during the major liturgical feasts, particularly those celebrating the Virgin Mary. On the left, the shutter shows the Resurrection of Christ: Jesus emerges alive from the tomb and rises into heaven. The Resurrection and Ascension are thus summarised here in a single image. On the right, the panel shows the Annunciation, when the archangel Gabriel comes to announce to Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, the son of God. Mary is depicted in a church to make the event sacred. This medieval marvel, painted by Grünewald, is on display at the Unterlinden Museum.
