Restructuring the Place d'Armes

In the Middle Ages, a canons' cloister and several places of worship stood on what is today the Place d'Armes. Facing the entrance to Metz Cathedral, the Bishop's palace was separated from it only by a small courtyard. The square was too small to be suitable for gatherings, parades, or processions. In 1765, its various buildings were destroyed by order of King Louis XV to create a veritable cobbled square. The Bishop's Palace was transformed into a town hall after being completely razed to the ground.
