In April 2008, in Fonds-Saint-Denis, following meetings between old and young farmers, was born a desire to revalorize the different systems of mutual aid practiced in the lasoté set up in the past by the free slaves to plow their sloped lands of the mornes in northern Martinique. This deep desire was formalized by the creation of the intergenerational association Lasotè animated by the respect for the nourishing earth as well as a spirit of solidarity, exchange, and social cohesion. Since 2008 and the first lasoté, the association has developed its action according to priority axes of oral and audiovisual collection of information, transmission of know-how through field practice, recovery of former flagship productions of the North Caribbean, or establishment of engineering cells. It aims to restore this intangible rural heritage of the North Caribbean to its nobility. Collective practices have, indeed, been devalued since the rural exodus of the 1960s and 1970s in favor of an urban and more individualistic education. The Lasoté association works with the support of the European Social Fund, the National Forestry Office, the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique, and the Urban Community of North Martinique.
