From the death of Michel Monet in 1966 until the 1970s, the gardens and the house of Giverny declined. In 1977, they were entrusted to Gérald Van der Kemp, the former restorer of Versailles. With the help of US sponsors and the work of the gardener Gilbert Vahé, the site of Giverny was brought back to life within three years. Based on numerous photos and plans by Claude Monet, the gardens were reconstructed and opened to the public in 1980. Today, the former house of Claude Monet is the second most visited place in Normandy after Mont-Saint-Michel.
