Restoration of the altarpiece statues

The Issenheim Altarpiece (1512-1516) has been on display, since the founding of the Unterlinden Museum, in the former Dominican convent’s choir chapel. The building is now brighter and more streamlined, thanks to the restoration of the nave and roof carried out between 2013 and 2015 by the Monuments Historiques. The lighting has been redesigned and the windows, covered with a veil, diffuse a soft light. A major restoration of the altarpiece painted by Grünewald and sculpted by Nicolas de Haguenau began in 2018 and will be completed in 2022. After the panels, the statues were removed and transported to the Centre de restauration des Musées de France.
