Limited terrestrial resources

Mangareva and the other high islands of the Gambier archipelago are characterized by steep slopes with no cultivable coastline and reduced water reserves. Populated around 900 AD, these islands with limited land resources suffered a radical human impact on their ecosystem. The destruction of the terrestrial fauna and the degradation of the endemic flora have depleted the soils and desertified the landscape.
