The shallot - which has now disappeared from the island gardens - has long been considered the green gold of Tiga whose resources are too scarce to provide long-term jobs for the island's youth who generally joins Lifou, then Nouméa, after primary school. In addition to its small production of copra, the island only has an untapped phosphate deposit and a photovoltaic station.
