The ancestors of reef corals date back to the Jurassic period, at the time of dinosaurs, 200 million years ago. Corals with the most massive and encrusting forms, characteristic of beaten environments, more easily survive weather and sea surges than those with the thinnest forms, which are better adapted to the calm waters of lagoons.
