Hunting residence in the 12th century

In Gallo-Roman times, a vast belt of forests surrounded Lutetia and the Bois de Vincennes is a remnant of this. The Château de Vincennes is located in the commune of the same name, in the eastern suburbs of Paris. Before the imposing fortress, the kings of France had a hunting lodge built in the 12th century – the Capetian manor – which was used by Louis VII. In 1183, Philippe II Auguste had a wall built around the wood to enclose the hunting reserve. The troubled period of the Hundred Years’ War prompted Charles V to carry out defensive work throughout the kingdom and to complete the construction of the Vincennes keep, which began in 1340.
