Protected marine reserves
Following the Matignon Agreements of 1988, skills relating to the environment formerly devolved to the Territory were entrusted to the Provinces. This transfer of skills has enabled the establishment of 19 marine reserves in the South Province, protecting a total area of 44,300 hectares. The 200 hectare reserve which surrounds the Maître islet and shelters these corals, is an example of them.
