Since the 1970s, a research program led by the Fondation de la Tour du Valat and based on the banding of greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) has allowed a better understanding of the species' biology and ecology. Banding, regularly deciphered by ornithologists from the Mediterranean area, provides information on the movements, feeding sites, lifespan, or reproduction frequency of greater flamingos whose status - sedentary, erratic, partially migratory, or migratory - varies among individuals. Specimens born in Camargue have thus been detected all over the Mediterranean basin.
