Historically renowned for its significant endurance, the Comtois horse presents an average size that oscillates between 4.90 and 5.40 ft (1.5 to 1.65 m) at the withers for a weight of 1,020 to 1,760 lbs (600 to 800 kg). Its coat with coppery chestnut colors is distinguished by a washed (light) mane, light frills before the hooves, and a small beige mark on the forehead. The chest is broad like its croup, and its limbs have well-marked joints. A Comtois horse usually lives between 20 and 30 years.
