The Fairy Tern (Sternula nereis) is a coastal species which breeds mainly on small islets, especially the Amédée islet. It digs in the sand or the shell mounds a summary depression which serves as a nest in the middle of the creeping vegetation, pumice stones and dead coral. Following the laying of 1 to 2 eggs, the incubation period lasts a little more than 3 weeks. The young take flight 3 weeks later while remaining dependent on their parents for another 2 months.
