Territorial and terrestrial, the black Mamba usually installs its burrow in rocky cavities or in tree slits, making its nest in underground chambers where the females lay about fifteen eggs. In the mating season, the males defy each other by wriggling in a kind of wrestling to 'win' the females of the territory.
