Repatriated to the United States

Ten squares, separated by the central aisle into two groups of five, form the space dedicated to the graves where 9,387 remains are buried, including 307 unknowns and 4 women. Most of these soldiers died in combat, on D-Day or in the following weeks in Normandy. Fourteen thousand bodies, initially buried in Normandy, were repatriated to the United States at the request of their relatives between the years 1947 and 1954. The white marble headstones are either in the shape of a Latin cross or of a Star of David, depending on the religious affiliation of the deceased.
