The green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, is the best known sea turtle. Its wide geographical distribution covers the Indian, Atlantic, Pacific oceans and the Mediterranean sea when the temperature of the water exceeds 68°F (20°C). It is found in coral reefs and lagoons of Polynesia. Until it reaches about 8in (20cm), it frequents the pelagic zones before continuing its growth in the benthic zones closer to the coasts and seagrass beds.
