Today, more than half of the Corsican population - which amounted to 326,950 inhabitants in 2015 - is concentrated in the coastal towns of Bastia and Ajaccio, where the population growth nears 2%, and on the littoral. At the same time, the small hinterland rural and mountain villages of less than 250 inhabitants see their population decrease of 0,3% on average per year.
