In the 20th century, Nordic skiing became a hobby and a winter sport, well separated from its military and service functions as well as from its cousin, Alpine skiing. It then experienced a significant boom and appeared at the first Winter Olympic Games in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (France) in 1924, with 11 and 31 mi events (18 and 50 km). Subsequently, the broadcast in Eurovision and Mondovision from the 1956 Winter Olympics (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy) made the discipline known worldwide and considerably increased its popularity as a winter sport.
