Relief and vestiges of pa

The island of Rapa Iti contains various archaeological vestiges, including pa. These are fortifications dating from the pre-European era which were built at the top of the mountains in the manner of the Maori warriors of New Zealand. Some pa overlook bays in floored terraces and ditches around a central fortress, while others include flat terraces and watchtowers along ridges or on passes.
