Rurutu is dominated by Mount Taatioe (1276ft/389m), northwest, in the Manureva massif. Another volcanic massif forming its central and southern part culminates at Mount Erai (948ft/289 m). Populated since the 10th century, it has many archaeological remains in the northwest, around the Vitaria marae and a number of caves including funerary ones.
