In the Alpes-Maritimes department, the Monts d'Azur reserve extends over a fenced natural area of 1,730 acres (700 ha) made up of moors, forests, and meadows. Several species of wild animals have been reintroduced there, including a whole population of European bisons. This reintroduction of large mammals would prove very beneficial for the plant diversity, which has gone from seven species of plants listed on the same plot when the reserve was created in the early 2000s to 38 ten years later.
