The ancestral know-how of Marseille soap manufacturing is regulated by the edict of Louis XIV of October 5, 1688, signed by Jean-Baptiste Colbert de Seignelay, Colbert's son. Its article III stipulated that soap makers were not allowed to add any grease, butter, mixtures of fat, or any ingredients other than soda, ash, and pure olive oils to craft soap, under penalty of confiscation of the production. The edict also forced factories to cease their activity in summer as the heat adversely affected the quality of soap.
