As a general rule, horse access to the beaches of Normandy is limited to low tide and low crowd times outside the summer period, when some beaches are authorized for horses before the arrival of bathers in the morning and late in the evening. Concerning tides, it is advised to go to the beach with a horse at a high coefficient (greater than 100) and at low tide. If wet sand is one of the best grounds for horses and if the benefits of equine balneotherapy are well established, riders must beware of baïnes (natural pools) and water holes as well as quicksands, hidden rocks, and the differences in soil quality that cause tendonitis.
