Ulukhaktok region, Victoria Island

0
Located on Victoria Island, Ulukhaktok is the easternmost of the Inuvialuit communities. Its name means 'the place where one find materials to make ulus', these universal knives with caribou wood or bone handles used by Inuit women. Their blades, elsewhere in slate, were in copper at Ulukhaktok. It is hard to imagine under the thick layer of snow of this photo that Ulukhaktok is also the home of the Billy Joss Open Golf Tournament, an annual event played under the midnight sun on Canada's most northerly 9-hole course.
