Environmental and seasonal variations partly determine the black-backed jackal’s diet. In brushy areas, it eats less gazelles and feeds mainly on rodents and small mammals. In times of drought, it is content with insects, reptiles sometimes even fruits. During antelopes' breeding period, it won't hesitate to hunt newborns.
