Although their great hardiness and good resistance allow them to live all year round on the mountain pastures of the Doubs and Jura, the Comtois horses must receive hay in winter to compensate for the scarcity of grass and its low nutritional value. With an average weight of 1,433 to 1763 lbs (650 to 800 kg), they must indeed eat between 28 and 40 lbs (13 and 18 kg) of hay each day in order not to lose weight nor reduce their tolerance to cold weather.
