The geological history of Ouvéa atoll partly explains the variations of its reefs and soft bottoms. The atoll located on the Loyautés ridge tilted from east to west hence its inclination and the presence of islets only to the east. The slope and the islets have a considerable influence on the geomorphology of the reefs and on the distribution of the sediments, just like the exposure to the trade winds.
