The symbiotic relationship that corals maintain with the algae they harbor in their tissues allows them to build an imposing limestone skeleton that is the architecture of the reef, a habitat teeming with life and species association. The accumulation of calcareous skeletons gives rise to calcium carbonate formations that can be more than 1.2mi (2000m) thick.
