The youngest son of Charles Martel, Pépin le Bref was first mayor of the palace. Elected King of the Franks in 751, he was crowned by Pope Stephen II in the Saint-Denis Basilica in 754. The first king of the Carolingian dynasty died in the Saint-Denis Abbey in 768. His wife, Bertrade de Laon, known as Berthe ‘au grand pied’, used her extraordinary diplomatic skills to ease the tensions between her two sons Carloman and Charlemagne, who shared the Frankish kingdom. Queen Berthe died in 783 and was buried in the Saint-Denis Basilica beside her husband. Around 1264, Louis IX (the future Saint Louis) had stone recumbents made of Pépin and Berthe.
