The exceptional oceanic biodiversity of the Raja Ampat archipelago located at the meeting point between the Indian and Pacific Oceans is, as elsewhere, threatened by the development of tourism and its impact on the environment. Thus, in March 2017, a cruising liner struck the unique coral reefs of Kri Island at low tide, damaging 44,291sqft (13,500m2) of corals and angering the indigenous populations.
