The French Polynesian archipelago most affected by the forest recession is the Austral Islands. Natural forests, such as the mountain rainforest at Raivavae, do not exceed 1 to 5% of the islands' areas. The reasons for this recession are due to the small available areas but also to the population density and the extension of fruit and vegetable cultures.
