Honfleur faces the port of Harfleur, with which it locks the entrance to the Seine estuary. They were of strategic importance during the Middle Ages. A first church was built in the 12th century in Honfleur. The city, fortified before the Hundred Years' War, was attacked by the troops of the Duke of Salisbury, who landed on the mouth of the Touques. They maintained a 3-week siege, drowning the city under huge blocks of stones. Sainte-Catherine-des-Bois Church was destroyed, and the town capitulated in 1419. The church was rebuilt in 1468.
