The materials used by the Polynesians of Rurutu, in the Austral archipelago, for braiding are rough - like the fibers at the base of the coconut palms - or transformed. They are then soaked, beaten, rinsed, smoothed and scraped. Leaves, lianas, barks, flowers, stems, veins, fruits can also be used, depending on the plant and the object to be made.
