The British navigator George Vancouver, a former companion of Cook, was the first to walk the ground of Rapa Iti in 1791. The first Europeans did not really land there until 1816. They brought a wave of epidemics that decimated the population. From 2000 inhabitants in 1816, it dropped to 150 inhabitants in 1864.
