Rapa's history
0
0
In 1791, when the navigator George Vancouver anchored his ship in front of Rapa, he estimated the population to 2000 inhabitants. The latter was divided in 12 clans who were perpetually warring each other. Numerous vestiges of fortified villages (pare) are traces of this permanent insecurity. When Christianism was implanted in 1826, struggles stopped but the population was confronted with a new enemy: slave traders from Peru who started to kidnap people.
