Located more than 621miles (1000km) south-east of Tahiti, Rapa Iti (small Rapa) - as opposed to the Easter Island, Rapa Nui (great Rapa) in Polynesian - is the most remote and isolated island of French Polynesia. The nearest inhabited island, Raivavae is 310miles (500km) away. With no airfield, it is connected to Papeete by the cargo ship Tuhaa Pae IV on average once every two months. Austere and almost arid, it has about 500 inhabitants.
