At the time of the first encounter with the Europeans at the end of the 18th century, the island of Rapa Iti was densely populated with 2,000 inhabitants spread over a dozen villages. It was divided into kingdoms that clashed perpetually because of the overpopulation of its steep lands which were difficult to access.
