The island of Rapa Iti was annexed by the French in 1887 to combat the Anglo-Saxon influence related to the development on the island of a coal supply port. Steam ships cruising the waters of the Pacific Ocean to Australia and New Zealand stopped there. As for the Peruvian slave ships, they deported a large number of inhabitants to the guano islands off the coasts of Peru.
