From the recent volcanic island to the elevated atoll, the Austral Archipelago offers a unique geomorphological diversity. Unlike most other islands in the archipelago, Raivavae stretches along a west-southwest/east-north-east axis parallel to the Austral fracture zone. This orientation suggests that the constituting magmas of the island have been routed along this fracture.
