The island of Tiga, in the Loyalty archipelago, is a raised atoll formed from an ancient coral reef covered with a thin but largely vegetalized soil. Its coastline alternates gray coral cliffs, higher in the southeast of the island, and white sand beaches. The uplift conditions of the island were conducive to the formation of a phosphate rock which has constituted an untapped phosphate deposit.
