The Causses region and, in particular, the Gorges du Tarn are populated by vultures from four species reintroduced since the 1980s after having disappeared. The Griffon vulture, characterized by its white head, was the first reintroduced in the Causses in 1981. The monk Vulture, slightly larger and lighter, was reintroduced in Lozère in 1992, while the Egyptian vulture, a much smaller migratory species, returned on its own to the region after the return of the other species. Finally, the bearded vulture, also present in the Alps and the Pyrenees, is being reintroduced in the Causses since 2012.
