Four impregnable bastions

0
At the end of the 16th century, the Sedan Castle had four polygonal bastions. To the north-west, the Fourchu Bastion, built under Robert IV de La Marck. To the north-east, the Governor’s Bastion, in honour of William of Mirbritz, Governor of Sedan. To the south-west, the ‘Bastion du Roy’ (King’s Bastion), in honour of King of France Charles IX. And to the south-east, the ‘Bastion des Dames’ (Ladies’ Bastion), named after the ladies-in-waiting of the castle. More than 600,000 m3 of stone, mud and masonry were needed for their construction.
