Between 1792 and 1863, the cloister of the abbey underwent numerous alterations due to industrial activity. One gallery was destroyed, another was widened to allow carts to pass through, windows were pierced in the walls, and an underground canal was dug under the garden sink, which collapsed. In 1864, Royaumont Abbey was returned to monastic life and extensive restoration work was undertaken. The roofs of the galleries were replaced by terraces and the ribbed vaults were rebuilt. The cloister has become the central living space of the abbey and today hosts the artistic events of the Royaumont Foundation.
