Located northeast of Nouméa, the Rivière-salée district was created from the end of the 1960s until 1982 on embankments built on a marshy area in the early 20th century to allow the passage of the mine train tracks between Nouméa and Païta. Its extension to the southeast on the mangrove of the Fifth Kilometer makes it the largest of all the Nouméan districts.
