With almost eleven million visitors per year, the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur (Sacred Heart) of Montmartre is the second most visited religious monument in Paris after Notre-Dame Cathedral. It was built at the end of the 19th century on a very old place of worship which had housed Roman temples and the first Christian building in Paris, the Saint-Pierre’s Church. After forty years of work and five years of war, the basilica was consecrated on 16 October 1919. Born of the wish to build a sanctuary in Paris dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur is intended to be a sign of penitence, trust, hope, and faith for the whole of humanity.
