The term 'fracture' is used to refer to any breakage of a very tight, compact, consolidated ice, fast ice or a simple floe caused by deformation phenomena. Ranging from a few feet to several miles, it can locally contain brash or be covered with nilas or young ice. Its width oscillates from 3.2 to 1,640ft (1-500m), below 3.2ft (1m) one speaks of 'crack'.
