Pycnandra acuminata, the illustration of the extraordinary New Caledonian biodiversity

Present in the Blue River Provincial Park of Grande-Terre, Pycnandra acuminata is one of around 40 plants capable of living on so-called 'ultramafic' soils, that is to say very rich in ferro-magnesium metals which are toxic substances that no ordinary plant survives. Endemic to New Caledonia, this unique tree illustrates the extraordinary biodiversity of the Melanesian archipelago.
