The Puy de Dôme (in the background of the photo) is a dome of trachytic lava formed around 11,000 years ago. This young volcano is located in the heart of the Puys chain in the Massif Central. Such a dome is formed when the silica-rich lava emitted by a volcano either fails to flow or flows insufficiently. It then accumulates at its exit from the volcanic chimney in a round shape on its summit or on one of its sides. The mass of the Puy de Dôme is estimated at 1,200,000 tons for a volume of one million cubic metres.
